“I was drawn to Fenchurch Law by the calibre of the people, the genuinely supportive culture, and the intellectually demanding nature of the work — and I’ve not been disappointed.”

As a Trainee Solicitor at Fenchurch Law, Pawinder is building her legal career at a firm that specialises exclusively in policyholder insurance disputes — an area known for its complexity, technical nuance, and real-world impact.

Having graduated with an LLB from University College London (UCL), she joined Fenchurch Law where she has been actively involved in supporting new client enquiries and assisting in the development of legal strategies. Working closely with solicitors and partners, she has played a key role in analysing coverage issues, helping to draft persuasive arguments, and ensuring clients receive clear, commercially focused advice.

Pawinder has a particular skill for identifying gaps in legal arguments and strengthening cases by approaching them from multiple perspectives — a strength that has proven valuable in both the early stages of enquiry and during in-depth case analysis.

The collaborative and specialist environment at Fenchurch Law has provided Pawinder with exceptional learning opportunities, and she is proud to contribute to a team that is known not just for its expertise, but also for its values.

“I founded Fenchurch Law so that policyholders would be able to access insurance disputes solicitors with the same specialist focus and market knowledge as are available to insurers. We work tirelessly to create an environment where every member of the team can reach their full potential and is committed to the firm’s cause of levelling the playing field for policyholders.”

David founded Fenchurch Law in 2010, and is the current Senior Partner, having previously been Managing Partner from 2010 to 2024. Fenchurch Law was created out of David’s vision to level the playing field between policyholders and their insurers. It was the first firm in the UK to specialise exclusively in representing policyholders in insurance disputes. He has guided the firm from a start-up to being top ranked in both of the main legal directories, being twice named Insurance Law Firm of the Year, and becoming the first insurance firm to be named Boutique Firm of the Year at The Lawyer Awards.

A significant element of David’s new role as Senior Partner involves international expansion. In 2024 he oversaw the launch of the firm’s first two offices outside the UK, in Singapore (serving the APAC region), and in Copenhagen (serving Scandinavia), in addition to the launch of the best friends relationship with leading US policyholder law firm Saxe Doernberger & Vita in early 2025.

David is one of a handful of lawyers recommended by both Chambers and the Legal 500 for representing policyholders in insurance coverage disputes. He is individually ranked in Band 1 of Chambers & Partners for representing policyholders in insurance disputes and is ranked as a Leading Individual in the UK in that field by Legal 500. Legal 500 says that he is “always thinking one step ahead” and describes him as “a very bright and capable litigator with real tactical nous” and “an incredibly smart and experienced insurance lawyer who is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with anyone in the industry”. Chambers says “David is an absolutely fantastic strategic thinker” and that “he is right at the top of his game and exceptional at what he does.”

Before founding Fenchurch Law in 2010, David was a Partner in a boutique law firm that specialised in advising insurers in relation to insurance coverage issues and professional indemnity claims.

David specialises in handling complex and high-value insurance coverage disputes, often related to construction projects, and often with a multi-jurisdictional element. Much of this work involves disputes arising under Construction All Risks (‘CAR’) (known in the US as ‘Builder’s Risk’), Professional Indemnity (‘PI’), and Public Liability (‘PL’) policies.

He also advises policyholders and brokers with regard to cyber insurance wordings and disputes, including identifying gaps and overlaps between cyber and non-cyber insurance programmes and advising in relation to ‘silent cyber’ issues. David represented the policyholder in one of the first major ‘silent cyber’ insurance claims in the London market.

Since 2010 David has secured hundreds of millions of pounds in recoveries for policyholders whose claims had been wrongly turned down. Recent highlights include acting for:

  • The UK’s largest pub group in a £1bn claim arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • A state-owned petroleum company in relation to a US$400m claim under its Delay in Start Up Policy (“the Policy”) for losses caused by Covid-19 related construction delays.
  • A property developer on complex Delay in Start-Up (‘DSU’) claims arising from the construction of a landmark building in the City of London.
  • A Tier 1 contractor in relation to a series of insurance related claims and recovery actions worth in excess of £100 million.
  • A core participant to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry in relation to its claims under its Public and Employer’s Liability policies.
  • A prominent design & build contractor, recovering more than £75m from its professional indemnity insurers for its post-Grenfell fire-safety exposures.

David is a Solicitor Advocate with rights of audience in all Higher Courts in England & Wales, a member of the British Insurance Law Association and the Society of Construction Law, and is a Vice-Chair of the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association.  David is also admitted as a Solicitor in the Republic of Ireland.

“Aside from the quality of the work and its lawyers, Fenchurch Law has an incomparably modern approach. We play an invaluable role in the London insurance market and truly deliver on our mission statement of “levelling the field for policyholders”.

Alex is a Partner specialising in insurance disputes for policyholders. He is part of Fenchurch Law’s Construction & Property Risks team and has a particular focus on high-value, complex property damage claims.

A significant amount of Alex’s caseload involves disputes under the Insurance Act 2015 – often in relation to alleged breaches of the duty of fair presentation and breaches of policy conditions – and he is regularly invited to deliver public seminars on the same. In June 2024, he was quoted in a piece by Commercial Risk: “Courts yet to test key aspects of Insurance Act”.

Alex has also developed niches in claims involving (a) alleged breach of hot works conditions; and (b) fire safety / cladding exclusions; and (c) claims under latent defect policies.

He currently acts for a number of policyholders seeking indemnity under their PL insurance for claims arising out of hot works; and various companies (often architects) seeking cover under PI insurance policies for building safety claims. Alex is also regularly instructed to defend third-party actions against his clients, while also pursuing the insurance recoveries.

One of the firm’s most prominent public speakers, Alex has delivered a wide range of seminars and webinars over the last year and is a regular speaker at the firm’s annual Coverage Symposia. As well as presenting on the Insurance Act 2015, Alex has delivered training sessions on breaches of policy conditions, reinstatement, underinsurance and claims under the Building Safety Act 2022.

His recent cases include:

  • Representing the freeholder and leaseholders of an apartment block in connection with claims against building defect insurers, arising from combustible cladding, fire safety and structural defects.
  • Acting for an industry leader in the provision of surface treatment in connection with a substantial claim against its PL insurers.
  • Acting for a construction company in connection with a claim against its PL insurers following a significant fire at its customer’s premises.
  • Acting for the owners of a Ukrainian wind farm which was seized by Russian forces in 2022.
  • Acting for a main contractor seeking a recovery from its insolvent cladding sub-contractor’s PI insurers, following the discovery of significant water ingress and fire safety defects at a development.
  • Acting for a roofing company seeking cover under its PL policy for various incoming claims. The dispute turns on the proper meaning and effect of a ‘hot works’ condition, requiring the insured to take various steps before and after completion of work.
  • Acting for a private individual whose home was destroyed by fire, and in connection with a long-standing dispute with insurers regarding quantum and the basis of settlement. Alex successfully helped the policyholder to make a significant recovery.
  • Acting for an architect pursuing a claim against its PI insurers in connection with substantial fire safety claims against it.
  • Acting for the owner of a data centre pursuing a claim against their property insurers, following a significant theft.

Alex is passionate about delivering Fenchurch Law’s mission to level the playing field for policyholders. He has been quoted in several leading insurance publications and newspapers on coverage issues in the last year, such as Commercial Risk, Insurance Age, Insurance Business and Construction News.

Alex is a member of the Society of Construction Law, the British Insurance Law Association and the London Business Interruption Association. He has also been awarded Higher Rights of Audience, enabling representation of clients in the higher courts.
