“I was attracted to Fenchurch Law because of the breadth of expertise it has across all lines of insurance for brokers and policyholders. Ayo is an associate solicitor specialising in coverage disputes and is a member of our Construction and Property team.

Ayo also has a keen interest in environmental insurance risks, especially relating to ESG, Climate Change and Environmental Liability. His recent experience includes:

“I was attracted to Fenchurch Law due to its excellent reputation within the legal insurance market. But I was equally impressed by the business’ commitment to ensuring that when a dispute arises, the policyholder has the same advantage as the insurer, in an industry where traditionally this has not been the case. This purpose together with its forward thinking and unique values, drew me to Fenchurch Law from the start.”

Jessica is a Senior Associate and is a member of the Financial and Professional Risks team. She represents policyholders in high-value and complex commercial coverage disputes.

Over the past year, Jess has had day-to-day conduct of several major litigated cases and has helped recover over £50 million for policyholder clients, including:

  • Acting for a national bakery business in relation to a coverage dispute worth over £150 million, following a substantial factory fire. The claim related to an indemnity for property damage and consequent BI losses and disputed issues on alleged breach of a hot works condition and the application of a non-invalidation clause. It was one of only a few cases where a claimant has been successful in securing an expedited trial in the Commercial Court.
  • Acting for a dental practice against two insurers following a major fire which caused significant property damage and BI losses in excess of £8 million.
  • Acting for a large national housebuilder in respect of its block notification for defective cladding claims with losses in excess of £40 million.
  • Acting for a prominent member of the Mexican legal community in relation to a Kidnap & Ransom Policy following attempted extortion by corrupt government officials in a dispute worth $18 million.

Prior to joining Fenchurch Law, Jess had over 8 years’ commercial litigation experience and worked on many complex and high-value matters with successes in the High Court and Court of Appeal. This included acting for an American luxury property developer in a widely publicised coverage dispute pursuant to the TPRIA 2010. This claim resulted in victories at first instance and in the Court of Appeal.

Jessica is a member of BILA.

“I was attracted to Fenchurch by the size, purpose and direction of the firm. Despite being a fairly young firm, Fenchurch has quickly established a very strong reputation within the legal insurance market for first-rate protection of policyholders’ interests. Fenchurch Law’s core values – which emphasise forward-looking personal responsibility – also drew me to the firm, as the entrepreneurial culture is one in which Fenchurch lawyers are able to think outside the box to get the best possible results for their clients.”

  • Representing a national baking company in a c£100m insurance coverage dispute arising out of a substantial fire at a commercial premises. The matter proceeded on an expedited basis and settled shortly before trial.

“I was attracted to Fenchurch Law by the opportunity to act for policyholders – who traditionally have not had access to specialist coverage lawyers as compared with the huge choice available to  insurers. I enjoy the intellectual challenge, the problem-solving and the need for precise thought and precise language to secure the best possible client outcome.”

Fenchurch Law partner, Jonathan Corman, is a member of our Financial & Professional Risks team.  He acts exclusively for policyholders pursuing claims for indemnity against their insurers or defending uninsured claims made against them.

Jonathan has been an insurance specialist for almost 30 years, concentrating primarily on professional indemnity, as well as D&O, Financial Institutions and construction.

He has litigated at all levels of the court system, is familiar with the arbitration process, and is a strong believer in mediation whenever it is appropriate.

Jonathan acted for the successful policyholder in the 2023 Court of Appeal case of RSA v Tughans, which concerned indemnity for a claim relating to the policyholder’s own professional fees.

Other recent highlights include:

  • Acting for a Ukrainian company embroiled in a €150m insurance for the loss of its windfarm following the Russian invasion.
  • Acting for a construction company in dispute with its PI insurer regarding a £13 million claim involving complex issues as to whether the alleged liability arose from negligent design or (excluded) defective workmanship.
  • Acting for a group of foreign investors who had lost £2 million on a fraudulent investment and who are now pursuing the insurers of the insolvent bond issuer under the Third Parties (Rights against Insurers) Act 2010 (‘TPRIA 2010’).
  • Acting for a financial services company in a £30 million dispute concerning reinstatement of limits under PI policies.
  • Acting for a Bermudian fund manager in dispute with its English PI insurer regarding cover for a multi-million-dollar class action suit in the US.
  • Drafting an urgent ‘block notification’ for a large UK financial services company.
  • Acting for an English bank on a disputed claim under its Crime Policy following a multi-million mortgage fraud.

Legal 500  has described Jonathan as “at the foremost of his field, and a pragmatic and realistic lawyer who quickly identifies the issues and ways to address them … He is razor sharp and pulls no punches in achieving the best outcome for policyholders”.

Likewise,  the Chambers & Partners Directory has said that “Jonathan is an absolutely exceptional insurance lawyer; he knows the field inside out and has real gravitas.”

Jonathan is a member of the British Insurance Law Association and the Society of Construction Lawyers.

Managing Partner

“In Fenchurch Law, I was delighted to find a law firm that not only shared my ambition to level the playing field for policyholders but whose sole focus was to achieve that vision. I enjoy being part of a specialist, collegiate team with a shared vision and common goals.”

The firm’s UK Managing Partner, Joanna is a highly regarded policyholder side coverage specialist. Joanna also leads Fenchurch Law’s Construction & Property Risks team, advising policyholders in high-value commercial coverage disputes relating to all types of property risks including under Commercial Property Policies and Building Defect Guarantee Policies. Her practice area includes a Financial & Commercial Risks element, in particular advising on Trade Credit and Warranty and Indemnity Policies.

She is recommended by Chambers & Partners, where she is individually ranked for representing policyholders in insurance disputes and is recognised by Legal 500 as a leading individual with one referee commenting that ‘Joanna Grant is a brilliant litigator. Tenacious, brilliant with the detail but never losing sight of the commercial objective. You would always want her on your team.’

The Lawyer magazine named Joanna as one of its Hot 100 for 2025, highlighting her role in several significant BI cases, including Hollywood Bowl and International Entertainment. Business Insurance selected Joanna as one of its 2024 Women to Watch, an award designed to celebrate women leaders in the insurance and risk management sector. Business Day gave Joanna top billing in its top ten list of ‘policyholder lawyers in UK 2023 providing substantial insurance influence’, referring to her as an “experienced insurance lawyer” whose expertise is “pivotal” in property-related claims.

A significant part of Joanna’s caseload in recent years relates to Covid-19 (‘Covid’) BI claims, she successfully recovered amounts considerable in excess of £100m+ for her policyholder clients which include large commercial organisations and household names such as:

  • World Challenge, a provider of overseas adventure travel programs, in a hard fought and hotly contested matter resulting in a resounding victory in July 2023. The matter was due to be heard in the Court of Appeal in 2024, before settling on commercial terms. The case made significant findings in relation to principles of estoppel.
  • International Entertainment Holdings, a national theatre group, resulting in a Court of Appeal judgment in October 2024 which held that Covid can amount to an “incident” and which is now cited as an example of how the court’s approach the construction of insurance policies.
  • Hollywood Bowl Group plc, a national chain of bowling alleys, with the court claim case-managed alongside a number of related claims advanced by policyholders against the insurer, Liberty. This case was listed by The Lawyer as one of its Top 10 Appeals of 2025. Hollywood Bowl settled its claim in advance of the Court of Appeal hearing.

Joanna has particular experience in combustible cladding cases, advising building owners, managing agents and groups of leaseholders with interests in high-rise buildings in respect of insurance claims for the cost of replacing the ACM cladding and/or other defects. Following the issue of proceedings in one such claim, with a value in excess of £20 million, the insurers admitted liability and commercial settlement was achieved at mediation in 2023. Additionally further claims under the Building Safety Act 2022 (‘BSA 2022’) were pursued against third parties. Joanna also acts for developers and construction professionals with regard to the scope of cover under PI policies for fire safety related claims.

Joanna routinely acts on property damage and business interruption (‘BI’) claims arising under commercial policies. Recent highlights include acting for:

  • A professional league football club, securing a favourable settlement for a in relation to storm damage.
  • P&O Ferries in relation to damage to a pontoon that sank in adverse weather conditions.
  • A waste management plant in a complex, high-value matter involving significant business interruption losses caused by machinery damage.

Joanna joined Fenchurch Law in 2016 after 18 years at Allen & Overy, where she gained broad experience in complex multi-jurisdictional proceedings and arbitrations acting for financial institutions and global corporates, including advising policyholders on political risk, crime, and D&O policies.

Joanna graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA (Hons) degree in Oriental Studies and a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, before completing her CPE and LPC. She is a member of the British Insurance Law Association, the Society of Construction Law and Women in Property.
